Interesting article indeed. It's true that the popular debate is still in tune with some of the general opinions about the idea of an apology for slavery.

Though I am intrigued as to why the government in the shape of the PM felt that it was necessary to do so. There was no pandering to the oppositional ideas any apology for the past is meaningless. The continuities are acknowledged as legitimate.

Of course a lot of people would say it only ended 40 years ago (which is SHOCKING!!) though let's consider that it was only 50 years ago that the African descendents of those enslaved and transported came to England to continue to build up the wealth and infrastructure of this country. Just like their ancestors were kidnapped, transported and forced to do.

Of course as imperial dominions and later commonwealth countries, history was drawn upon as justification for them to be invited over (by Enoch Power) and that history was practical in the sense that native tongues were brutally eradicated, these dark-skinned people all spoke English, had learned English history in their English styled schools and worshipped in English churches. These are the consequences of Empire.

Now what's really good about this news story and debate about the trasportation of English children is that there are those who contest that "they sold their own" in respect of any discussion on the African enslavement as if to say 'why are they [black folk] blaming us [white folk]'. Well clearly like in the 12th century when Bristol transported white slaves to Ireland, we can see it's not about 'black' and 'white' but about Exploitation of anyone in the name of Empire, Money and Power!!!

There is a collection of his work with an introduction by Stuart Hall - "Vanley Burke: A Retrospective". I haven't got the book infront of me at the moment but I am sure it is in there.

Maybe you know Tunde, part of the problem is that the maketeers only seem to know how to sell very limited idea of certain artists and artforms.

I think it's not until an underground movement, artist or band blows up (usually on an independent or small label) that the big marketeers take notice.

It firstly takes people to express their interest in talent like thisi with their wallets. Hence we will only hear Snoop and Fiddy Cent.

Glad to hear you BOUGHT the album as that is the real way to show your support for artists as as good as Asa who don't otherwise get the desreved recognition. VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET. Don't Limewire her!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asa/dp/B0011V7IKC

"Check out Fire on the Mountain talking about the problems in Africa especially the Niger Delta problem of Oil exploration in Nigeria. "
