Audio of public debate in Bristol in 2006 – in two parts. It’s interesting to note that while the debate question was put as ‘ Should Bristol Apologise for the slave trade? ‘ , the course of the debate led the Bristol public to force a change of question.
A vote was started on the first question during which there was already a call from the floor to change the question. The chairperson took the new question ‘Should Bristol INSTITUTIONS apologise for the slave trade?’ . As this happened, the initial vote was clearly going one way, while the new question went the opposite way.
The debate clarified a lot of misunderstandings about where people stood and how they understood certain words, phrases and ideas. Altogether it was a healthy airing of important issues that Bristol people needed to exchange with each other.
