After bumping into the Head of Cultural Services in Bristol earlier this year and excitedly declaring that blogging was the way to go on this Bristol 2007 thing, I made faltering moves in that direction.
Blogging is of course the natural home of exchange and expression of such an emotive subject of how a city (nay country) commerates the ‘notorious’ Abolition of the Slave Trade Act. Since the passion on the subject is high, most of our views are clouded by ignorance, and opinion seems to be as good as fact, the blog is the platform that holds sway.
The blog is allowed to be emotional, required to be opinionated. It’s the publishing tool of the moment, and representative of the zeitgeist which, along with reality-tv and Tony Blair’s premiership (!) means lone voices get to stand out from the crowd with their own worldview.
Also a place was wanted where many people can contribute and dialogue can ensue. With this wordpress site, that’s possible through comments and additional authors.
After spending too much time trying to establish a blog on the www.bristol2007.info site. And after struggling with hosting a joomla site on the same, it was a case of following my good friend and colleague’s (Naphtali) example and using wordpress.com to take the headaches out of publishing. So here it is.
The perfect time to start this blog is now. AFTER OCTOBER (UK Black History Month), and when the 2007 year is nearly over. The dust is settling. The Opportunitists are moving onto new, more fashionable issues, and the true impact of the commemoration year might begin to emerge.
Peace on Earth. Good Will to all.
Have a nice day !
I love your site! 🙂
